Abstract
Hurricane Katrina was a horrible tragedy. Rather than reprising the obvious pitfalls of governmental response or the dire consequences of social inequalities, however, I pose a series of questions. In particular, I seek to highlight the blind spots and silences that the media frenzy generated. These range from the fate of the Native Americans and the complexity of New Orleans' racial history to the explanatory adequacy of the dominant narrative and the unreflective premise of the reconstruction effort. The precarious state of nature and civilization demands a way to think and act beyond short-term palliatives.

DOI: 10.1093/oso/9780197515235.003.0020
Abstract
This chapter offers some last thoughts and advice from artists featured in previous chapters. It includes a discussion of what lies ahead for site-specific performances in the coming years, given that our post-pandemic society may continue to require some physical distancing for the foreseeable future, so it is likely that many arts institutions will increasingly turn to artists whose work can be easily adapted to outdoor or spacious performance venues. The chapter notes that site artists are experienced problem-solvers and experts in adjusting to constantly changing circumstances. In general, artists see the world with fresh eyes and are always moving forward—inventing new ways to use mediums, challenging tradition, revolutionizing aesthetics and techniques. But, as an interviewee noted, with the recent activity of outdoor performances and a new interest in site-specific works, there is “often little understanding that site work is a genre with a genealogy and a purpose, which is to dialogue with a site and be sensitive to its past, present, and even future.” Finally, the chapter highlights the purpose of the book, “to provide the next generation of site artists an understanding of the premises on which site work is based, ways of thinking about site work, and practical tools for ensuring that their work will be site-sensitive and -specific.”
