Die Piltdown-Fälschung ist wahrscheinlich der bekannteste Betrug in der Geschichte der Wissenschaft. Die wissenschaftliche Enthüllung des Piltdown-Schädels im Jahr 1912 löste eine Reihe von Ereignissen aus, die das Studium der menschlichen Evolution für 40 Jahre beeinflussten. Als „Eoanthropus dawsoni" klassifiziert und als „Der erste Engländer" gefeiert, wurde Piltdown von vielen Gelehrten unterstützt, von vielen anderen jedoch in Frage gestellt.
