Die Plattentektonik, die Erforschung der Anordnung von Kontinenten und Ozeanen auf der Erdoberfläche und ihrer fortlaufenden Bewegungen, Trennungen und Kollisionen, hat unser Verständnis der Erdgeschichte und der biogeographischen Geschichte der Primaten-Evolution revolutioniert. Primaten sowie alle anderen Organismen haben sich auf einer dynamischen, ständig verändernden Erde entwickelt, auf der die Positionen der Platten, die Kontinente, Inseln und Ozeane bilden, über geologische Zeiträume nicht statisch sind. Sie wachsen manchmal, schrumpfen manchmal, verbinden sich manchmal und trennen sich manchmal. Die sich ändernden Positionen der Platten über die letzten 60 Millionen Jahre der Primaten-Evolution boten den geographischen und klimatischen Hintergrund für die Ausbreitung und Isolation einzelner Klade, die ihrerseits ihre Radiationen und/oder Aussterben aufgrund von Konkurrenz oder Klimawandel beeinflusst haben. Darüber hinaus waren die Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Platten für die meisten geologischen Prozesse wie Vulkanismus, Hebung und Rifting verantwortlich, die zur Ablagerung von Sedimenten geführt haben, die die Fossilien enthalten, auf denen unser Verständnis der Primaten-Evolution basiert.
