A paleoantropologia moderna é amplamente interdisciplinar, integrando os resultados de estudos em paleontologia de hominídeos (ou, mais geralmente, primatas), morfologia e sistemática com arqueologia, estratigrafia, cronometria, paleontologia geral, tafonomia e ecologia, entre outros campos. (Aqui emprego o termo "hominídeo" para incluir todos os hominoides avançados do Mioceno ao Pleistoceno, seguindo Delson e Andrews, 1975; da mesma forma, "hominino" (ou "humano") refere-se aos membros da subfamília Homininae dessa utilização, especialmente Australopithecus e Homo. Muitos outros autores restringem hominino/humano apenas a Homo, empregando hominídeo onde eu uso hominino.) Essa abordagem integrativa tem sido tanto espetacular quanto bem-sucedida na África Oriental (veja Laporte 1980), devido à influência de F. C. Howell, os Leakeys e seus colegas, mas também tem sido responsável por avanços recentes em outros intervalos temporais e espaciais na evolução humana. Nesta revisão, concentrarei-me nos aspectos morfo-evolutivos dos estudos paleoantropológicos recentes, indicando fontes principais e novos desenvolvimentos. A maioria dos fósseis não referenciados de outra forma é discutida, embora muitas vezes com uma interpretação diferente, no texto de Wolpoff (1980a).
