26. Yochelson, Ellis L., 2001, Schatzmeister der Smithsonian Institution, Charles Doolittle Walcott: Medical Entomology and Zoology.

Abstract

Smithsonian Institution Secretary continues the story Ellis L. Yochelson began in Charles Doolittle Wolcott, Paleontologist (1998). Using Walcott's letters and journals and the recollections of friends and colleagues, Yochelson discusses Walcott's life and career as secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. As secretary, he worked thelessly to revitalize the dispirited organization, fighting for funding, recognition, and support from presidents, Congress, and the general public. 30. Yochelson, Ellis L., 2006, Charles D. Walcott: Einige Bemerkungen zu Stratigraphie und Sedimentation: The Sedimentary Record.

Abstract

Some contributions seem to have been quite deliberate, whereas others may have been less conscious. Examples of his deliberate scientific efforts are: measuring and describing more than 8250 m (25,000 ft) of strata in Utah and Arizona; interpreting the origin of limestone breccia and conglomerate within a limestone matrix; calculation of geologic time from rates of sedimentary deposition; and consideration of the Ozarkian and Canadian as time periods. An interesting contribution that may have been less obvious is the observation that limestones could form quickly in shallow marine water.",

Abstract

37. Darwin, Charles, 2014, The Correspondence of Charles Darwin: Cambridge University Press eBooks.

Abstract

Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically: Volume 21 includes letters from 1873, the year in which Darwin received responses to his work on human and animal expression. Also in this year, Darwin continued his work on carnivorous plants and plant movement, finding unexpected similarities between the plant and animal kingdoms, raised a subscription for his friend Thomas Henry Huxley, and decided to employ a scientific secretary for the first time - his son Francis.",

Abstract

Abstract Die Walcott-Grube wurde 1909 vom Smithsonian Institute's Charles Doolittle Walcott (1850–1927) entdeckt.

The Cambrian Burgess Shale (505 Ma, Miaolingian) crops out in the quarry and the lagerstätte is the nexus of ongoing vigorous debate about fossil preservation (including taphonomy and diagenesis), taxonomy, classification, phylogeny, and the origin of phyla and baupläne. Smithsonian Institute's field crews collected from 1909–24, and the quarry was subsequently expanded by Harvard University (1930), the Canadian Geological Survey (1966–67), and the Royal Ontario Museum (1992–2000). Approximately 250 000 fossils, including soft-bodied forms, have been collected, making the Walcott Quarry with exposures of the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale, a significant geoheritage site and an important representation of the Cambrian Explosion.",
