- La variabilité du rapport C-14/C-12 et la nécessité d'une calibration ont été reconnues dès 1969 (Dickin 1995, 364-366). La calibration est possible en analysant la teneur en C-14 d'objets datés par des méthodes indépendantes. La dendrochronologie (datation de l'âge par le comptage des cernes d'arbres) a été utilisée pour calibrer les rapports C-14/C-12 remontant à plus de 11 000 ans avant le présent (Becker et Kromer 1993 ; Becker et al. 1991). La datation au C-14 a été calibrée remontant à plus de 30 000 ans en utilisant la datation uranium-thorium des coraux (Bard et al. 1990 ; Edwards et al. 1993), à 45 000 ans en utilisant les dates U-Th des sédiments de varves des lacs glaciaires (Kitagawa et van der Plicht 1998), et à 50 000 ans en utilisant des carottes océaniques provenant du bassin de Cariaco qui ont été calibrées aux couches annuelles du glacier groenlandais (Hughen et al. 2004).
